Police officers in Essex were called to 262 incidents between midnight and 4am today.

The calls included an assault in Halstead, a shop break-in in Sible Hedingham, an intruder alarm in Great Bardfield and reports of youths drinking and causing a nuisance in Witham.

Essex Police said the number is an increase of 130 per cent compared to an average Friday morning.

Of the total incidents, 121 were emergencies, an increase of 537 per cent compared to a normal Friday morning.

Chief Inspector Simon Anslow was Essex Police’s Silver Commander for the night.

He said: "There were loads of emergencies and priorities and we got them all covered thanks to some really great work by our officers and staff.

"There was on average an incident every minute across the county.”
