THE trustees of a proposed community centre will ask council bosses to help with the cost of the £2.5m project.

Planning permission has been granted for a new building to house Halstead’s museum, library and council offices in Butler Road.

Braintree Council has pledged £650,000 towards the scheme and Halstead Town Council has also agreed to contribute.

The Halstead Community Centre Charitable Company, first set up in 2013, will now ask Essex County Council to chip in.

Chairman of the trustees, Jackie Pell ( pictured), said: “We are trying to sort out a meeting with Essex County Council because Braintree and Halstead are assisting.

“Although we are applying to the Community Initiatives Fund, run by the council, we are looking for capital funding as well because it has been done in other areas.”

Mrs Pell declined to say how much money was being sought and said there was a “long way to go” before the group could access the cash.
