A woman says she feels deeply honoured after being asked to lay a wreath in memory of her grandfather at the VJ day commemorations.

Kerry Smith, 48, of White Horse Avenue, Halstead, took part in the 70th anniversary service in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on Friday.

VJ Day honours the British and Commonwealth soldiers who fought to defeat Japan in the Second World War.

Her grandfather, Sam Seekins, who lived in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, joined the Second Battalion of the Cambridgeshire Regiment.

He was captured in Singapore in 1941 and spent the next three years at a prisoner of war camp.

He was one of 60,000 allied prisoners of war who was forced to build the bridge over the River Kwai in horrendous conditions.

Kerry, a play leader for charity Home-Start, said: “He never spoke of his experience."
