Even some councillors fear money is being flushed down the pan after news the cost to repair toilets will cost an additional £5,000.
Refurbishment works to the toilets behind the Sainsbury’s in Chapel Street, Halstead, were already going to cost £105,233 - which would buy a one-bed flat in Trinity Street and leave £10,000 change.
However, a survey has found asbestos in the ceiling boards.
Legally, the asbestos has to be removed as it can cause serious health complications, including fatal forms of lung cancer.
Quotations to carry out the work to remove the asbestos have been received and the lowest is £5,070, with the highest at £6,300.
This is on top of the £105,233 already pledged.
