Halstead Town Council flew a flag for the Commonwealth.

The council joined 38 other countries raising more than 750 flags to commemorate Commonwealth Day on Monday.

They raised the flag in the Public Gardens.

The Queen raised the last flag at Westminster.

Councillor Andrew Munday, who attended the service, said: “It was very worthwhile.

“The mayor gave a speech and the flag was raised.

“It looked very resplendent as there was a bit of wind.

“It wasn’t well attended, but we are planning to do it every year and I am sure more people would be interested in coming next time.

“Halstead is a market town and has a history.

“Things like this are nice for the town.”
