The preferred bidder for controversial land in the heart of Halstead has pulled out.

Braintree Council was in the middle of exchanging contracts with a preferred bidder to develop for land east of the High Street, in Halstead.

However, this week the council has announced negotiations with the developers - who they refuse to name - have stalled.

Councillor Lady Patricia Newton, cabinet member for planning and property at Braintree Council said: “We can confirm that the preferred bidder has opted to pull out of purchasing the site.

“The consortium of landowners are now considering whether to look at other bidder’s proposals or to remarket the site on the open market.”

The news has been welcomed by campaign group 21st century, who want the site to be turned into allotments, a community orchard, gardens and heritage centre.
