Villagers are fighting against Braintree Council to have a controversial piece of land allocated as a village green.

Greenfields has been given planning permission by Braintree Council to build two new affordable homes on land south of Oxford Meadow in Sible Hedingham.

The housing association got the go-ahead in summer 2012 but building work has still yet to begin, with an application for village green status to Essex County Council pending after it was submitted by a group opposed to the development.

Village green status, if awarded, would thwart any development plans.

A public inquiry into the application, which sees both campaigners and officers at Braintree Council battling it out for why the land should or should not be turned into a village green, has been held at Braintree Town Hall this week.
