Firefighters were scrambled to rescue a Jack Russell which was trapped inside a pile of rubble.

Eight firefighters from Wethersfield fire station, based in Finchingfield Road, took up an unusual call last Tuesday after the small dog chased a fox into a huge pile of crushed bricks, blocks and mortar at a disused airfield in Castle Camps Road, Helions Bumpstead.

Watch manager Darren Hockley led the team to remove more than a tonne of rubble in an hour to release the dog, named Harry.

He said: “When we arrived, we could hear the little Jack Russell and the owner was quite distressed.

“It was really a question of having an educated guess of where the dog was and just slowly removing rubble piece by piece.

“After we removed some pieces we came across the fox that it must have chased, so we had to have a rethink."
