A man was fighting for his life after he was assaulted on leaving a pub.
The 48-year-old, thought to be from Walton, was in intensive care with serious head injuries.
The attack took place in Saville Street, Walton, outside the entrance to the Royal Albion pub car park in The Parade.
Pub staff said the victim was part of a group who seemed happy when they left the pub on Tuesday at about 10pm.
Moments later he was involved in a disturbance and suffered serious head injuries.Police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the incident and detectives were questioning him last night.
Today they renewed their appeal for witnesses to the assault.
