SPEEDING motorists are the target for police in one area of Colchester.

The neighbourhood policing team for the Newtown and Christchurch areas are hoping residents will come along to monthly beat surgeries, as well as attending the neighbourhood action panel.

Top of the agenda at both gatherings is the issue of people speeding down residential roads. Officers are in the process of arranging a speed gun to be operated in problem roads to catch the offenders.

A high-visibility policing operation is planned to try to tackle the problem, with the possibility of £30 fines issued to motorists in the future.

The beat surgery will take place tomorrow at Christ Church, in Ireton Road, Colchester.

PCSO King will be there to offer advice and information about issues in the area.

The action panel will also meet at Christ Church on May 23.

Speed doesn't kill, stopping quickly does however.

Why have a possible fine.No if's or buts, caught speeding £30 please and 3 points you then would slow down,it should also go for phones instead of the police just driving by.

The reduction in casualties in Hull and Portsmouth, which have both gone over to widespread 20mph areas, is amazing. Essex County Council, please do likewise. See http://www.20splenty

Would somebody like to enlighten me as to the location of this mythical part of Colchester where it's possible to do more than 20mph these days?

Colchester motorists already have speed cameras, both fixed and hidden, speed bumps, bus lanes and more traffic than ever before to contend with, not too mention pedestrians who seem to think they have priority over the heavy steel box they've just stepped out in front of.
The last thing they need is another reason to have their eyes glued to their speedos in state of paranoia instead of watching where they're going.

Rather than taking these hobby bobbies away from more serious duties like fining people for petty misdemeanours, not solving anti-social behaviour and diluting the powerbase of the 'real' police force, why don't we actually educate people to be better drivers and better pedestrians in the first place, slowing traffic down to a crawl (not that it's possible to get anywhere quickly these days anyway) doesn't sound like progress to me and it's bad for the environment.

Evidently not:
"Only two percent of road accidents were caused by adult drivers exceeding the posted speed limit, according to the UK Department for Transport (DfT). The figures were provided earlier this year in an official report to the House of Commons Select Committee on Transport regarding the impact of novice drivers. The DfT based its analysis on 147,509 accidents ranging in severity from slight to fatal."
