Residents have been urged to object to any future plans for a new nuclear build on the Bradwell site.

A packed meeting of West Mersea residents heard that the future of the plant, once it is decommissioned, would be out of the hands of current managers Magnox South.

Representatives from the company and the Nuclear Development Agency (NDA) held the public meeting to update residents about progress at the plant.

Bill Hamilton, from the NDA, told the meeting private companies would be able to bid for the plant and its surrounding land.

He said: "We will not be putting forward any proposals for a new build at Bradwell, but the Government announced recently it is favourable to private sector companies putting in proposals.

"We have carried out a consultation with local communities about what they want for the "end state" of the plant, and they have asked for it to be returned to greenfield site with public access.

"We will assess this and make our own proposals before putting them all before the Government.

"We won't be involved in any other consultations, and I urge you to contact the Government and give them your views about the future if a new build is suggested."
