Christians will swap church pews for bar stools and dance floors as they offer help to revellers in Colchester.
A squad of about 20 committed churchgoers are being trained to work as street pastors, patrolling the town centre in the early hours.
The team want to follow the example of Jesus, who preached to thousands of people in the open air as well as in synagogues and temples.
Instead of laying down the law to boozy teens, they will spread the "love your neighbour" message by offering advice and a shoulder to cry on.
Started in London, the street pastors scheme runs in seven towns and cities, including Southend, where it has been hailed a success.
The Colchester version - which has the backing of police and council bosses - will launch when the recruits' training is complete in a few weeks.
