VOLUNTEERS helped clear an overgrown footpath linking two Colchester communities.

Organised by the Centurion Rotary Club the 24 pairs of helping hands of all ages tackled the route between Hythe and New Town .

The event was part of an initiative by the Rotarians to improve all footpaths around Colchester and give people pride in their town.

As well as chopping off overhanging branches the group cleared litter and overgrown grassy patches.

The team, which also included volunteers from Essex County Council and community groups, took three hours on the hottest day of the year to clear the path from Port Lane to Hythe Quay.

Rubbish bags were supplied by Colchester Council . Volunteer and Rotarian Christine Beedle said: “It was a very good and satisfying morning’s work, and a big thank you to all in Rotary Centurion and all the community volunteers who joined us.”

While the volunteers did a great job and it's nice to hear, it suggests Colchester Council has too many highways and byways to maintain, either it needs to increase maintenance or else close some of said roads and footpaths.

Im_Like_HELLO is absolutely right. Most cycle paths and footpaths in the Borough are littered with rubbish. It's the areas where offenders cannot be seen breaking the law which is the problem. The are only two solutions; more staff or tougher laws. The former is unlikely.

This is Essex County Council's job not Colchester Borough's
