A DEVELOPER is ploughing ahead with plans to build 128 homes in Stanway.

Bosses at Hopkins Homes are finalising their proposals for the former railway sidings, off Halstead Road.

It is thought the planning application could be submitted to Colchester Council in the next few months.

Last month, major concerns were raised about the plans after residents spoke out about traffic and air quality.

Stanway county and borough councillor, Kevin Bentley, called on the bid to be withdrawn at a meeting of Colchester Council’s local development framework.

He said the railway sidings site had not undergone proper scrutiny and was not suitable for homes. But Hopkins Homes planning manager, Robert Eburne, this week said residents’ comments on the site had been mainly positive.

He added: “This development would feature our renowned high-quality design and attractive landscaping alongside improved public access to, and management of, the area north of the railway, which is currently private land. It would create an area of community woodland for the long-term benefit of the locality.

“We are committed to consulting with the community over our plans for the site and the detailed feedback has been really helpful in formulating the forthcoming planning application.”

Stanway residents were consulted over the proposed plans in October after Hopkins Homes held an exhibition in the village.

More than 120 people turned out to have their say, on issues such as traffic, nature conservation and infrastructure.

The proposals feature in Stanway’s local development framework, which has set aside the railway sidings for up to 140 homes.

Colchester Council has said there will be a review of the document, including the plans for the railway sidings, but it could take up to two years.
