COLCHESTER’S first ice rink is all set to open, creating 20 jobs.

David Pullen and brothers George, Gary and Dennis have spent about £250,000 transforming a former NHS building on the Whitehall Industrial Estate into the Diamond Ice Rink.

The 75ft by 25ft synthetic ice rink has room for as many as 80 skaters at a time and is due to open on February 25.

It also has seating for 30 people and a snack bar.

Mr Pullen, 42, from Kirby Cross, said it felt great to be the first people in Colchester to open an ice rink.

He added: “It has taken a long while and I’m exhausted. I can’t believe the ice is finally in.”

The rink will be open seven days a week from 10.45am until 10.30pm, split into five two-hour sessions.

The building, in Grange Way, was previously known as Heath House and leased by North East Essex Primary Care Trust, as a base for services for patients with learning difficulties.

Thats really good news ! I've said for a long time that Colchester would greatly benefit from an ice rink. Its a shame it is'nt a full size "water ice" rink but a good start. I used to spend most of my youth at Altricham ice rink in Manchester & once you get a hockey team started, that will bring people in & the possibilities are many fold from young to old. Anyone who's never tried should give it a go, it's great exercise & great fun too. Good luck to the owners & hopefully they can get a cold rink going.

nice addition to what the town has to offer, will certainly pay it a visit!
would be good to see some attractions over at the stadium area and new junction on A12 - ala at Northampton's 'new' stadium, they have the nice complex with cinema, restaurants etc

I used to skate at Richmond.
But I'm seeing a thread here. There's a lot of us who enjoyed ice skating. When my kids were small I would have loved to have taken them. But I didn't drive in those days and the closest rink was Chelmsford. We had a roller rink up the road, but that never appealed in the same way.
