Police jobs saved but taxpayers will pick up the bill

DOZENS of police officers have been saved from the axe after Essex Police Authority decided to ignore the Government and raise council tax.

Members voted for a 3.47 per cent increase at a meeting yesterday, The Government had requested a freeze but this would have meant another 93 police officers going - on top of the 388 already being cut by 2014/15 - and, according to one member, mean “streets filled with volunteers and vigilantes”.

i'll sleep easier in my bed knowing my £5.00 a month extra tax is funding the much needed thin blue line.

Not only have they 'ignored' the Government, they have increased it by a huge amount. Will the Gazette now investigate how much a 3.47% increase will actually raise so we can work out the average salary of these 93 officers that were supposed to have been made redundant?! I suspect that much of this increase is to actually fund the huge pension black hole that increases year by year due to the fantastic deal these officers get. How is it right that a police authority can vote on it's own increase with no one to question them or question how much extra we have to pay.

These oficers are paid huge sums of money with an unthinkable pension deal which lets them retire at 55. Not only that, they 'retire' at 55 on a full pension and then are immediately re-emplyed on a part time basis!!!

Come on Gazette, actually do some reporting and ask some questions.

They do are hard job but most people would do it given the chance with the pay, perks and pensions deal they have. They get paid overtime for every extra 15 mintes they work, ask any office worker if they get paid for every extra 15 minutes they work??!!!!
