Snow-struck schools closed "for safety reasons"

SCHOOLS closed down yesterday for the safety of pupils following heavy snow.

Primary schools Queen Boudica, Friar’s Grove and Willow Brook, and secondary schools Colchester County High School for Girls and St Benedict’s College were the only Colchester schools to close on Monday.

Headteachers said they had been forced to close because teachers could not get into work and they were concerned for the safety of their pupils.

See Wednesday's Gazette for the full story.

I work at a school and we were open yesterday because the snow wasn't severe enough to justify closing. However, it was shocking how many children didn't show!!!

"teachers could not get into work". Did they use solar powered vehicles because everyone else managed. The roads were clear. They should of got there early and cleared paths if they were worried about safety. And what really gets my goat is the same teachers are always moaning how hard off they are. It everyone else their attitude the whole country would grind to a halt but then again some of us have a work for a living in the real world.

Teachers who didn't get to work had no incentive to try! They will get paid whether they make the effort or not!

Unlike many parents who had no choice but to take a day off to look after their children. Many parents will have had to take a 'holiday' day, or not get paid. Do the teachers who took the day off care?

Again I want to point out we travelled from Norwich to Colchester perfectly fine by road on Sunday & I travelled to Hammersmith from Lexden in the week, so why on earth teachers thought they couldn't get to work is beyond me.
This is rediculous. It's a few inches of snow !!

If you live in the middle of nowhere then fair enough, its dangerous to drive, anyone else can walk to a train station.

Friars Grove is in the middle of a housing estate where most children walk to school.

The teachers drive in on roads that were perfectly clear.

When I went to that school you had to be dead or dying to have the day off and the teachers were in rain or shine.

Poor decision by the head, there is no safety issues it's just snow. Man up!

All that is needed is a safe clear path to the main door, they can stay in during breaks, like we had to.

Not ALL teachers skived off. I drove from a small village with dangerous road conditions, up the A12 to another small village with even worse road conditions. Not a great deal of fun, but school continued unabashed. Some people just want a day off.
