Happy birthday to Colchester's Girl Guides

GENERATIONS of girls and women who have been taking part in girlguiding in Colchester have celebrated 100 years of the girls-only group.

Current and past members of Rainbows, Brownies and Guides gathered at Hollytrees Museum to light a camp fire and toast marshmallows to mark the group’s centenary.

A new exhibition, featuring photographs and other archive material from Colchester Girl Guides, has now opened at the museum and will showcase the history of Guiding in Colchester.

The free exhibition is being run by Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service.

Ciara Canning, community history curator at Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service said: “Many girls have been involved with Guiding at some stage in their lives, as Brownies, Guides or leaders.

“This exhibition gives us a chance to tell their stories and pass on the magic and history of guiding to all our visitors.”

Highlights from the exhibition include film footage of Princess Margaret’s visit to the guide rally at Hylands Park in 1949 and an original watercolour by Agnes Baden-Powell, the founder of Girl Guides.

The display also includes log books, badges, uniforms and photographs.
