The parents of a teenager who died after being hit by a speeding car have spoken of feeling “let down by the legal system” at the sentence given to the driver.
Daniel Andrew, 16, died when his bicycle was hit by a car in Greenstead Road, Colchester.
Muhammad Riaz, a part-time pizza delivery driver, yesterday admitted driving without due care and attention, and was fined £500 and disqualified from driving for a year.
Speaking after the sentence, Daniel’s parents Mark Andrew, 44, and Mandy Stewart, 39, of Goldfinch Close, Colchester, said they felt “a sense of disbelief at what has happened”.
“This has been the worst few months of our lives,” Mr Andrew said.
“The sentence was probably the maximum that the judge could give by law, but we feel that justice has not been done."
