PLANS for 35 homes are set to go ahead in beloved woodland, despite outrage from residents.

Taylor Wimpey has applied to build the off Dyers Road in Stanway, but residents feel they would spoil the landscape.

However, Taylor Wimpey has stressed in a design statement the woodland would be retained.

Colchester Council's planning committee recommends to approve the application at a meeting on April 26.

Concerned Steve Jennings said: "I'm distraught over the whole thing, I had given up as I didn't think anyone cared.

"I suppose it has got to happen but they are building a concrete jungle, I don't understand why they can't keep some woodland."

The site is subject to two tree preservation orders, and some trees will be saved.

A total of 35 letters of representation have been received and the comments made focus on the loss of trees and adverse impact on wildlife.

One letter of support was received, saying the designs are complimentary and pleasant.

The developer will be able to build the two bed, three bed and four bed houses if they comply with a Section 106 agreement.

As part of the agreement, affordable housing must be included and there must be a financial investment in education, community facilities and open space.

The planning committee's report said: "The current application will provide a choice of housing types with a range of prices in a sustainable location. "The development will contribute positively towards the borough’s supply of housing.

"There would be economic benefits as a result of construction activity and the possible creation of additional jobs.

"There is sufficient evidence to be confident that overall the development would not cause significant harm to flood risk, air quality or would not have a severe impact upon the highway network - in terms of capacity or safety."

They said the application looks sustainable.

They added: "It is considered that the benefits of the scheme significantly outweigh by any adverse impacts."
