A MUM is "overwhelmed" by the amount of support which has been flooding in to help her son who tragically lost his baby and was then diagnosed with cancer.

Emergency transport attendants Ashley and Victoria Jones’s son George died in February last year when he was just five months old.

He was born with his bowel, liver and stomach growing outside of his body.

At 11 weeks old George underwent major surgery to have his organs put back inside his body, which was successful.

Ashley and Victoria spent their birthdays and Christmas Day in hospital with their son, but he sadly later died.

While the couple were still grieving over the loss, Ashley, 30, was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.

Ashley, of Conies Road, Halstead, was diagnosed with the illness in November and started undergoing chemotherapy in Colchester Hospital.

On finding out about Ashley’s cancer, his friends set up a fundraising page to try to raise enough money to give the couple a dream holiday.

However, Ashley’s condition took a turn for the worse last week when he found out his cancer has spread to his spine and there is a chance it is in one of his lungs too as he keeping getting blood clots.

Doctors then told Ashley he could not continue chemotherapy until the issue with his blood thickening has been resolved.

Ashley’s mum Wendy Jones, of Harwich Road, Mistley, said it was a “real blow for the family” to find out her son’s condition has got worse.

She said: “We just have to be strong for Ashley and Victoria, but it is hard.”

Wendy said she is raising money all the time with her local scout groups for Ashley, and family friend Diane Butcher has also been organising events. Wendy said: “This has taken off really well and we have raised nearly £4,000 from fundraising.

“Ash can’t work anymore and so we are trying to raise as much as we can to help him out.”

The money, which was originally for a dream holiday before Ashley’s condition worsened, will go towards items he and his wife will need over the coming months.

Wendy added: “There is no deadline and we are raising as much as we can, but we are overwhelmed by the support we have had.”

Diane Butcher, 53, of Brooklands Road, Brantham, met Ashley when he was working for St John Ambulance in Manningtree, where he grew up, when she was being trained as a First Responder.

She said: “Ashley is such a wonderful person and truly is amazing in every way.”
