A CAMPAIGNER launched a tirade against plans to build 920 homes per year in Colchester during BBC's Question Time last night.

John Akker, MBE, who came to prominence in his efforts to halt plans to build 350 homes on Mersea Island as part of Colchester Council's initial local plan proposals, took aim at the authority during the political debate show.

He said: "I think it is disgraceful that the minister [Conservative Greg Clark] is relying on the argument about a lack of money.

"He ought to live in Colchester.

"There is no infrastructure here to support the housing.

"Colchester is one of the largest areas of house building in the south east of England.

"It has had record numbers of houses built and it out-performs all other Essex towns by a country mile and yet this [Colchester] council here is determined to build 920 homes a year.

"The hospital can't cope, the roads can't cope and the schools can't cope."

He added: "The Government wants to lump more houses in Colchester and people in Colchester are completely fed up."
