A DEDICATED fundraiser has beaten his own record to raise thousands of pounds for a military charity.

This year Colin Martin organised a charity golf day and hog roast which raised £11,244 for the Help for Heroes recovery centre Chavasse VC House in Colchester.

It brings his total over seven years of fundraising to more than £55,000.

Colin was inspired to raise the cash for Help for Heroes after his colleague’s son, Lance Corporal Josh Boggi, lost an arm and both of his legs in Afghanistan after triggering an explosive device.

Tickets for the latest event sold out within an hour. Money raised goes to support former servicemen and women and their families in their.

Mr Martin said: “I’m so pleased with how it went; it was beyond all my expectations. When we first set up the event, we were hoping to make £2,000 to £3,000.

“When we raised £9,927 last year I thought that was it. I can’t believe we’ve beat it again. The community pulls together for this event and each one of them has helped change someone’s life.”

Steve Schollar, head of recovery East at Help for Heroes, said the efforts of the fundraisers are incredibly important to the charity.

He said: “Their money means we have a foundation to plan for the future so that we can supply sustainable and long-term support to our beneficiaries.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Colin and his team for what they do for Colchester recovery centre where H4H helps to rebuild lives.

“I’m proud to say Help for Heroes and Chavasse VC House continue to play a major part in the nation’s commitment to our veterans.”

Colin added his thanks to a number of people and organisations for their contributions to the event.

He said: “I just want to thank my volunteer committee and helpers who ensured both the day and night went smoothly and the people who turned up and spent generously on the night.”
