A dad hid inside his car to get away from his abusive son who had threatened to tie him up after he was refused an egg sandwich.

Wayne Lovett staggered towards his dad’s home in Fiddlers Folley, Colchester.

But his dad, Keith Lovett, was sure he was under the influence of drugs or something similar and refused to let him inside.

However a hungry Lovett, 35, continued begging for an egg sandwich and his dad eventually relented.

Carole Fern, prosecuting, explained this is when Lovett became combative and threatening.

He later pushed his dad so he stumbled but there were no injuries.

Dad Mr Lovett, said: “He seemed okay at first but when he went into the kitchen, he began getting aggressive towards me.

“He came up in my face and was saying the usual things like: ‘It’s all your fault,’ talking about his childhood.

“I was sitting down in the living room and stayed there at first.

“Then I went to the kitchen but Wayne was still being aggressive so I left.

“He followed me out into the living room.

“He was screaming at me and because this had happened before I decided I couldn’t stay there - I had to go out.

“I got back out into the hallway, but then realised I didn’t have my keys or phone. He pushed me quite hard.”

Ms Fern added Lovett had threatened to “smash his father up” and tie him under the stairs.

To escape the situation, Mr Lovett locked himself inside his car while he waited for police to arrive.

Lovett admitted assault by beating on April 7 this year at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He committed the offence while on licence, having been released from prison in September 2016.

Stephen Moriarty, mitigating, argued the assault did not involve violence and was more of a “push” as Lovett barged past his dad.

He added: “I’m sure you all realise from my client’s previous convictions they relate to drug-related offences in May of late, and this is the first offence involving violence since being a youth.

“I say violence, I remind you this was just a push.”

Lovett, of Forest Road, Witham, received a 12-month community order with a curfew for 12 weeks at his Witham address and must stay away from Fiddlers Folley.

He was ordered to pay £385 in costs.
