PLANS to close a vital rail crossing are going ahead despite 85 per cent of residents being against the proposals.

Wivenhoe residents complained to Network Rail during its consultation on closing the Paget Road footpath across the railway line.

Figures have revealed 227 people use the crossing daily in the week with a further 103 each day at the weekend.

50 people wrote to the company. But despite 85 per cent speaking against the plans, Network Rail said it had not changed its mind.

Cyril Liddy, (Lab) Colchester councillor for Wivenhoe, said: “I’m deeply disappointed.

“It’s a public right of way and has been ever since Paget Road was built. There have been no accidents there and it is completely safe.

"Closing it will take a few seconds off a journey for commuters but that is it. This is an exercise in power. It’s very sad.”

There are four ways of getting from one side of Wivenhoe to the other.

But Mr Liddy said people who struggle with mobility would find it difficult to cross elsewhere.

As part of the plans, Network Rail is also investigating creating a new footpath for Wivenhoe residents who currently use the crossing.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The ultimate decision on the proposals will be made by the Secretary of State. Nevertheless, Network Rail is committed to improving safety and efficiency at level crossings, as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan, so that it is better able to meet the increasing demand for rail travel across the region.”
