Once I have settled down to watch the television of an evening there is often the serious business of what to watch.

Often there is only a small window of opportunity before it is time to turn in, particularly if it is a school night, so this is an important choice.

And since there aren’t a huge amount of programmes my husband and I both like to watch together, it is often a difficult one.

In fact the overlap would probably only include University Challenge, Mastermind and the first five series of Sons of Anarchy before it just got ridiculous.

His is a more cerebral approach to viewing so more often than not he will seek out a BBC4 documentary on Baroque architecture whilst I catch up on the soaps/murder mysteries/talent shows.

But this week we happened upon a series called The Night Of, which is available in its entirety to download as well as watch week by week on Sky Atlantic.

Essentially a crime thriller, it follows the tale of New Yorker Naz Khan, a law-abiding citizen who gets caught up in a murder which, on the face of it, pretty much looks like he did it.

At only eight episodes, it is actually billed as a mini series in US terms, but on these shores, it is still a fairly chunky production.

With only two instalments left to go, it was quite hard to turn it off last night, which is the danger of having it all to hand.

But watching it back to back gives a real feel of what the main character is going through, and also the changes he faces if he is to survive life on remand while he awaits his trial.

Some of the soaps could learn from this slightly speedier approach to storylines.

I really think Coronation Street's Pat Phelan, dodgy builder, tale has been dragged out to within an inch of its life now, along with the murder of Callum and the bullying of Bethany Platt.

It would be good to have a conclusion to at least one of these before Christmas.
