A DOG was poisoned after it ate pills wrapped in ham left near Colchester’s Castle Park.

Park wardens have stepped up patrols after the discovery, between Riverside Place and Wells Road.

The dog and its owner came across the ham, before the animal ate it.

It needed to be seen by emergency vets but is now recovering at home.

It is believed to have been an isolated incident.

However, the RSPCA is investigating and has warned people to be cautious of any food left in the park.

A spokesman for the charity said: “The RSPCA is deeply concerned about any suspected poisonings, but especially one where evidence suggests it may be deliberate.

“Animals, and especially dogs, are often extremely curious and will be drawn to food. Ingesting just the smallest amounts of some substances can lead to kidney failure and death.

“If anyone suspects that their dog has been poisoned they must take it to a vet immediately. If possible, they should take a sample of what the dog has eaten.

“If anyone has any evidence in relation to these poisonings we would urge them to contact the RSPCA’s national cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.

“Poisoning is a criminal offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.”

The poison was found on Saturday, July 16 at just after noon. Details of the incident were not released by the council or RSPCA until we contacted it after information we received yesterday.

A Colchester Council spokesman said patrols had been stepped up.

He said: “We received a report on July 16 of food discarded near woodland at the north end of Riverside Place and Wells Road, which appeared to have been baited with a poisonous substance.

“Park staff were made aware and the RSPCA informed.

“No further incidents have since been reported.”
