STUDENTS and staff stunned their departing headteacher by donning masks of his face on his last day.
Nigel Hookway is leaving Highwoods Community Primary School after nine years in the role and 37 years in teaching.
Staff stopped Mr Hookway from entering the school until 9.30am and he was led to the hall for the surprise, and presented with a painting to say goodbye.
He said: “I didn’t know a thing about it.
“It is mixed emotions leaving because I will miss everyone terribly but I am leaving the school in a strong place.
“The painting had the thumb print of every child in the school and will mean an awful lot to me.”
Mr Hookway will now take on a role at the Essex Primary Headteachers’ Association.
