A NEW family support company has been launched to support children whose parents were born and educated in African countries.

Africana Families in the UK hosted a taster session for some of their services at an official launch at Firstsite gallery in Colchester.

The community interest company will hold cultural awareness workshops, family workshops, fun days and befriending and advocacy services.

Their services will help to manage a clash of cultures between the UK and developing countries in Africa.

Company secretary Rachel Wainaina-Walton said: “We look at perhaps where one thing which was accepted back home is not accepted here and we try and merge cultures.

“We had a lot of fun things including authentic African foods which people got to sample.

“We had stalls from businesses and a play area and library for the children.”

Colchester mayor Theresa Higgins was on hand to present certificates to community workers for their hard work.

The company is directed by Jacqui Gitau who has supported families in Oxford for the past ten years.
