A 70-YEAR-OLD former Colchester Rugby Cub captain is cycling 100 miles to raise funds for injured players.

David Wright, a member of Colchester RFC for 46 years, will cycle the course from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, to the Mall.

Mr Wright, who captained the club in 1977 and was president from 2009 to 2011 is raising money for the RFU Injured Players Foundation, which looks after injured players at all levels.

Mr Wright, of Straight Road, Colchester, said: “I played rugby for years, so this is a way of giving back.

“Fortunately, given the nature of the sport we don’t have that many life-changing injuries.”

He puts this down to improved teaching when players are young.

He said: “They do train a lot harder than I ever did.”

Last weekend he did the 75- mile Essex Castle bike ride.

He said: “It was to get my head into it.

“I thought if I can do that, I can do this.”

The biggest challege will be Leith Hill.

He said: “It’s short for lethal.

“I have a feeling I will be doingalot of grunting by the time I get to the top.”

So far he has raised £870 towards his target £5,000.

He said: “Hopefully we will go over £1,000.

“The foundation is for everybody, even down to a child playing rugby at school.

“Please be on that bike with me by making a donation.”
