A CAMPAIGN to keep GCSE PE physical is celebrating a victory - but there is still more work to do.

Tom Chapman, PE subject leader at Philip Morant School and College in Colchester, was one of the campaigners fighting plans to change the marking system for the exam.

Previously, 60 per cent of the marks for the GCSE were given for practical achievement with the remaining 40 per cent for theory.

But under proposals put forward, only 30 per cent of marks would be available for practical achievement with the remaining 70 per cent for theory.

A petition challenging the changes collected 9,000 names calling on Education Secretary Nicky Morgan for at least 50 per cent of the examination to be practically assessed.

Now Ofqual, the Government department which regulates qualifications and exams, has announced 60 per cent of marks will be awarded for theory tests with 40 per cent being allocated to practical achievement.

The changes are due to start next year and are aimed at making the examination more academic.

Mr Chapman said: "It is ten per cent in the right direction but I am going to keep pushing for at least 50 per cent practical assessment."
