A CHRISTMAS buffet was held to thank volunteers who check on the condition of prisoners and police pooches.

Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston hosted the thank you dinner for those who help with the Independent Custody Visitor Programme and the Dog Welfare Lay Visiting Scheme.

One group checks on custody conditions with surprise visits and the other checks how police dogs are trained and cared for.

After the meal the 13 volunteers were treated to a display by Cocker Spaniel Bruno, one of the most experienced police dogs in Essex.

Mr Alston said: "Running volunteer schemes is one of the most rewarding things I have had the chance to be involved in.

"There is no greater responsibility for PCCs than involving the public, their ideas, experiences and opinions in the review and scrutiny of Essex Police.

"I look forward to the really exciting year ahead where all of our volunteers will continue to have the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of these programmes.”

The scheme for police dog checks was relaunched by Mr Alston to make sure the then 40 working dogs were properly cared for.
