A headteacher whose 14 years in charge has seen his school ranked one of the best in the country has announced plans to retire.

Ken Jenkinson has said he will leave Colchester Royal Grammar School at the end of the school year.

The school, in Lexden Road, is rated outstanding by Ofsted and has consistently ranked in the national top ten for both GCSE and A-Level results.

Mr Jenkinson, who was appointed headteacher in 2000, said: "It is an honour and a privilege to serve as the head of this great school and I am sure there will be no shortage of able applicants for the post."
