COLCHESTER Academy has been given the lowest possible rating by Ofsted.
Inspectors say standards have dropped and progress is well below the national average.
The 700-pupil school has avoided being put in special measures, but it will be subject to regular inspections.
Headteacher Barry Hersom has revealed this year’s GCSE A* to C pass rate, including English and maths, is just 37 per cent.
He said: “I can’t argue with the overall conclusion because we didn’t have a good year with exam results.
“I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I can confidently say we have the best teaching team we have had and the school is in the best shape ever.”
The school is holding a special meeting to discuss the report with parents.
Many parents said they were surprised at the announcement, as they were pleased with the progress their children were making there.
