A SCHOOL which champions environmental, health and fair-trade issues will hold a farmer’s market next week. (Tuesday, March 19)
West Cornforth Primary School, in West Cornforth, near Ferryhill, is inviting all parents to the event between 1.30pm and 3pm on Tuesday. (March 19)
Pupils have helped organise the event and visited farms and markets to learn about produce sources and to invite traders they want to take part.
They will also hold their own stalls including baked goods and eggs from the school’s own hens and each class has been set a challenge to turn a profit using local produce.
Proceeds will go into school funds to supplement activities such as school trips.
Headteacher Janet Sarsfield said: “It fits in nicely with us wanting to be a green and healthy school.
“The pupils have become much more aware of the benefits of local produce, such as getting meat from local farms and butchers reducing the environmental impact as it travels less, and supporting local producers and retailers.
“We hope it is also an opportunity for families to buy goods they might not otherwise be able to get.”
Teacher Clare Hird, who has worked on the market along with eco-warriors and school gardening projects, said: “The children are very socially aware and very enthusiastic, they have been involved in all the decision making and we can see pupils influencing parents, encouraging them to think about what they buy such as Fairtrade goods.
“They have made a lot of effort and we hope parents support the market as they did with a previous one.”
