A DRIVER was taken to hospital after his van hit an electricity pole in the early hours of this morning.

The accident - involving a white Vauxhall Vivaro van - happened near the junction of Thorpe le Soken High Street and Landermere Road just before 2pm.

Police said the driver, who is believed to be in his 20s, was taken to Colchester General Hospital suffering from minor back injuries.

The road was shut in both directions following the smash. It was expected to stay closed until midday while EDF Energy carried out repairs.
