POLICE say get-tough powers which let them move on potential trouble-makers is driving down crime in Jaywick.
The number of reports about antisocial behaviour in the area fell more than 20 per cent after a police successfully applied for a dispersal order covering the Brooklands estate.
Calls from the Golf Green ward fell to 73 between September and January compared to 92 the previous year.
More than half were about incidents inside the dispersal order zone.
The order is designed to combat nuisance youths, noise, criminal damage, common assault and violence.
Insp Jason Scrivener said: “Clacton’s dispersal order in the town centre has proved to be very successful and is used on a regular basis.
“However, the Jaywick order has proved invaluable to ourselves and residents. People living in the area can use it to contact us and report anti-social behaviour, knowing that we will do something about it and they won’t have to necessarily provide statements or identify themselves as complainants.”
The dispersal order has now been extended for a second time.
It lets police ban people suspected of causing trouble from an area for up to 24 hours.
Insp Scrivener added: “We will continue to take the same robust approach towards individuals intent on causing criminal damage or alarm and distress to others and hope it sends a strong message that they are not welcome.”
