4:41pm Tuesday 16th March 2010

AN ELDERLY couple were saved by the bell after their fish tank caught fire.

The man and woman, both in their 70s, were taken to Colchester Hospital with smoke inhalation after their home in Vista Road, Clacton, caught fire.

It is believed the blaze started after the filtration system in their fish tank suffered an electrical fault and overheated.

Firefighters said the couple were lucky to escape more serious injuries and probably owed their lives to their fire alarm, which alerted them to the flames n the back entension of their house.

The pair were able to escape their home before fire crews arrived at about 9.30pm last night.

Two teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire, which left the property heavily smoke damaged.
