Thousands fall silent in Clacton to remember lives lost in war

In a heartening display of respect, thousands of residents stood side-by-side to listen to the service at Clacton’s Memorial Garden, in Marine Parade West, on Sunday morning.

A parade was led off by the Colchester Scout Band and members of 3 Parachute Regiment from Colchester Garrison.

Veterans, residents, councillors and youth organisations then all stood side by side for the service on the town’s seafront.

The Rev David Lower of St Paul’s Church, Clacton, led the service at the seafront gardens, which was accompanied by the Salvation Army Band.

Ellie Bould, of Tendring Brass Band, paid sombre tribute to the lives lost in wars past and present with renditions of The Last Post and Reveille.

Dan Casey, president of the Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion, was impressed with the sheer number of people who took part in both the parade and the service.

He said: “The Legion thanks all those who came along today for their fantastic support.

“It is very special to see so many of all ages standing side by side – especially the young people - and it makes it a day to remember for so many reasons.”

Around 50 wreaths were laid around the memorial in memory of those who gave their lives, including one from Tendring Council chairman Mark Platt and chief executive Ian Davidson Mr Platt said it was a very special occasion when so many came together to honour all those who have given their lives in numerous conflicts over the years.

He said: “It was a truly amazing turnout which was the equal of last year’s record attendance and that section of the seafront was totally packed out as far as the eye could see.”

“It was a great honour for me to be there and to take part representing all the residents of Tendring,” he added.

Hundreds of people also turned out to pay their respects at Walton’s war memorial on Sunday.
