Princes Theatre

Girls Like That

Review by: Michael Poole

During a History lesson when the teacher is talking about Suffragettes, a picture of Scarlett, completely naked, is sent to the mobile phone to everyone in the school.

Will the other girls, who Scarlet has known since her early days at the school, throw a protective ring around her?

No way, they are too busy bitching about her body, comparing their own bodies against hers and denouncing her as a slut Melissa Wenn’s production of the eight-schoolgirl cast tackled this hard-hitting play with the full force it needed.

This was a slick, aggressive, funny, sad, fast moving and skilfully choreographed production.

The young cast dealt with very difficult situations regarding their character’s own sexual fantasies, that may well have embarrassed some of the older members of the first night audience, with immense strength and acting ability.

I found it impossible to select any member of the cast above the others as this was an ensemble piece of work, where all the cast members had equal billing.

Both the audience and cast were on the Princes Theatre stage with the actors, at times, only inches away from the audience for the non-stop one-and-a-half-hour production.

Working with only eight chairs on the stage and no set the director and cast are to be congratulated on a fantastic performance.

I left the theatre exhausted after watching this play and I look forward to seeing this group of actors in future productions.
