AN Army veteran was left shaken after being knocked off his mobility scooter by a hit-and-run driver while he was on a zebra crossing.

Graham Caines, who is 74, was crossing a road at Clacton’s Brook Retail Park when he was hit by a grey car on the zebra crossing between Tesco and Pizza Hut.

The former Alton Park councillor was left shaken following the incident.

It came just days after Tyler St George, 22, was hit by a car on a zebra crossing in Old Road, Clacton.

Mr Caines said he was shaken and sore after the incident.

He said: “It’s disgraceful. He just left a 74-year-old man in a mobility scooter on the floor.

“It happened so quickly, I didn’t really see what happened.

“I was already on the crossing, but he knocked me over and sped off. The driver made no attempt to stop.

“There were two people who saw it but they didn’t want to know and just ignored me.

“But two young men and a young lady, who didn’t see what had happened, helped me up.”

Mr Caines added: “My scooter was in a bit of a mess and they put it back together the best they could.

“I was very shaken and feeling a bit sore. It was quite a jolt.”

Mr Caines visited the nearby Car Phone Warehouse, where he was attended to by staff.

The former Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer served during the Borneo Confrontation and suffered shrapnel wounds to his back from a landmine in 1965.

“I served in the Army in Borneo and I felt safer there than I do when I’m on a pedestrian crossing in Clacton,” he added.

“I contacted the police, but as far as I’m concerned, the police have done absolutely nothing.

“I haven’t heard a word from them. I don’t think anybody really cared.

“I would like to thank the three young people who came to help me. It shows that there are good people out there”

The incident happened at about 3pm on August 28.

Anyone with information should contact Clacton police on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
