THE decor of a coffee house in Frinton's Connaught Avenue has steam coming from councillors' ears.
Johnathon Richardson, of Connaught's Coffee House, submitted an application to replace its outside wall tiles which surround the entrance to the shop.
Veering away from the iconic green tiles seen on other premises, Mr Richardson wants to replace those with glossy black tiles.
Sand-coloured tiles on the floor will also be replaced with a brick effect tile.
Councillor's enthusiasm towards the revamp was tepid.
Nick Turner, for Frinton ward, said: "This is vandalism."
The council moved for refusal with the condition that the old dark green tiles must be restored.
Mr Turner added: "I'm sure you can still buy them in France somewhere."
