An interesting geological formation has been revealed due to cliff erosion at the north end of the Naze cliffs.

Gerald Raynor reports that it is an ice wedge visible in the junction of the London Clay and Red Crag.

It’s about 15 metres south of the Walton Trail post near the pill box at the top of the hill.

Visible only from the beach, just north of the three concrete cylinders (foundations of the Seconrd World War anti-aircraft guns). Ice wedges form in tundra/permafrost where debris falls into cracks.

A crack opens in the permafrost and debris falls in forming the wedge.

Sunny Point, leading to the Naze Car Park is now an official part of the National Cycle Network (reference 150).

It is also soon to be incorporated into the England Coast Path as part of the Jaywick to Harwich route.

Bird sightings reported by Liz Huxley include Common Whitethroat, Chiffchaffs, and a rare Kentish plover visited recently.

Two little terns were see fishing off Stone Point, hopefully they might nest there.

Whimbrel have been passing through on their way further north, and several have been seen along the shoreline.

There are still a number of Sanderling on the beach, and some are now gaining the reddish tones of summer plumage.

The Warblers are very vocal this time of year – Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Cetti’s warbler, Willow Warbler, Reed Warbler, and Sedge Warbler.
