It was found on Brightlingsea promenade on Wednesday February 1.
A plaque on the box reads: "In loving memory of our special friend Rupert. 1978 -2003."
If no one comes forward to claim the box it will be interred by Essex Police’s chaplain.
Anyone with information is asked to call PCSO Colin Moss on 101.
