CROWDS packed onto the Walton quayside to enjoy a spectacular yacht club open day.

Walton and Frinton Yacht Club opened its doors to the public for the special annual event on Saturday.

There was something for everyone, with water-based activities and boat trips along the backwaters – as well as stalls, games, competitions and refreshments for those who prefer to stay on dry land.

More than 60 children entered a crabbing competition, with prizes for the heaviest crab, the prettiest crab and the creature with the most barnacles.

A raft race also provided top entertainment for the gathered crowds.

Harry Triffitt and Will Chetwynd-Stapleton triumphed on the smallest craft, while some rafts did not make it to the finish line.

Walton’s lifeboat also made an appearance, motoring along the backwaters and docking at the club, giving visitors the chance to climb aboard.

Funds raised on the day will go towards the restoration of a 60 year-old Payasu craft, used by the club as a vital part of the cadet training and racing programmes.

Club commodore Martin Jenkins said: “The open day is a great opportunity for the yacht club to invite local people in to see what we have to offer.

“The club is approaching its 100th year but surprisingly a vast percentage of people who live in Walton, Frinton and the surrounding area are unaware that it exists.

“We hope people like what they saw and we welcome new members who are interested in taking part in any aspect of boating and being part of a friendly and thriving club.”

The yacht club takes part in national competitions, but also has training facilities to get people of all ages into sailing and boating.
