Review: Hay Fever

Frinton Summer Theatre, McGrigor Hall, Frinton

FRINTON Summer Theatre treated patrons to a masterclass of fast-paced wit as they presented Noel Coward’s classic comedy Hay Fever.

The play follows the eccentric, yet charismatic, Bliss family over the course of what should have been a pleasant summer’s weekend.

The eccentric family members are all expecting guests, but have neglected to tell anyone else that others are coming to stay.

It sets the scene for some farcical situations as the dramatic and dysfunctional family wreak havoc on their unsuspecting guests.

Plaudits go to Ed Max for directing a most enjoyable presentation of the classic comedy. It was fast-paced and witty, but also charming.

Other than a few opening night slips with the dialogue, the cast worked together perfectly.

Credit goes to Eva Feiler, who played Sorel Bliss, for a wonderful performance and also to Maggie Daniels, who provided the comic relief as housemaid Clara.

Vivienne Garnett, playing Myra Arundel, also made a fantastic return to Frinton Summer Theatre after appearing in the excellent Private Lives in 2013.

For me, the star of the show was Serena Jennings, who played shy Jackie Coryton, pushed to her limits by the oblivious Bliss family.

Tickets cost from £14.50 to £17.50 (£12 to £14 for the Saturday matinee) from the box office on 01255 676656.

The play runs until Saturday, with evening shows starting at 7.30pm.
