FIVE crews of firefighters were called to a stubble fire off London Road, Clacton, on Monday evening.

The stubble measured 800 metres squared and was 20 per cent alight when crews were called out just before 5pm.

The crews from Weeley, Clacton, Colchester, Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe and Frinton used eight hosereel jets to put out the blaze by 6.08pm.

Farmer Matt Swain of Little Clacton said the fire started around 4pm on land adjacent to Cann Hall Estate. It is believed children playing may have caused the fire.

“The owners, McBain and Jarvis, are very thankful to the fire crews. Their swift actions prevented the fire from destroying standing crops or indeed nearby back gardens,” he said.
