NEW matting has been installed on the sand in Clacton to boost beach access for people with wheelchairs or pushchairs.

The plastic matting surface has been put down on the beach at the end of First Avenue to help people get across the sand.

It has been put in place by Tendring Council and is held down by stakes, making it easy to move or remove.

Clacton disability campaigner Barry O’Connell was invited to test the matting and hailed the impact it could have.

He said: ““It really is important to have facilities like this as they make such a difference.

“Hopefully some more will be provided on other beaches where they are needed most around Tendring.”

Beaches in Clacton, Walton and Dovercourt already have new shower, toilet and changing facilities for people with disabilities.

Council commercialisation boss Nick Turner said: “This is the first site where the new matting is being trialled matting and will see how it works out - and then maybe it can be extended to other areas.

“The matting has already generated quite a bit of interest and has been put in front of our new beach huts on the sand.

“It is all part of our on-going drive to make our sandy beaches and seafronts accessible to all so people can enjoy their visit and return here with confidence and be sure of a warm and friendly welcome.”
