British soldiers bravely beat off French invaders as they tried to storm Jaywick’s historic Martello Tower.

Huge crowds turned up over the weekend for a ‘what if’ scenario, which saw the public following the activities of the 95th rifles and other regiments.

Soldiers were also stationed in the fortress that defined coastal defence, from the beginning of the French wars in 1794 to the end at the Battle of waterloo in 1815.

Visitors were able to chat with the soldiers and they saw how they lived and were on constant alert.

The fictional French invasion was the showpiece event, giving an insight into what really would have happened if the French had landed on the English shore.

The living history event, organised by Essex County Council, also featured stalls, refreshments, games and family fun activities.
