PIER bosses expect a record number of 200 people will be working at Clacton’s landmark attraction this summer.

Owner Billy Ball said he employs about 40 people all year round, mainly with skills such as carpenters, electricians and painters.

But it is thought that figure will shoot up to an estimated 200 this year due to extra investment and attractions.

Recruitment is about to get under way with a career open day on Monday.

Clacton Pier as a business is continuing to grow year on year and we intend to carry on that way,” said Mr Ball.

“With all the skilled and unskilled jobs, as well as my 12 tenants and their 50 or so staff, we will be looking to hit the 200 mark this summer which is all good news for those looking for work in the town.”

The careers open day is on Monday, February 10, from 10am to 8pm. People can simply turn up with their CV at the Boardwalk bar.

Jobs include accounts, administration, aquarium staff, bar workers, chefs, mechanical engineers, marketing staff, ride operators and welders.

Tendring Council regeneration boss Giles Watling said every new job in the district was important and congratulated the pier on its expansion.

“The council is keen to see investment in our towns and the facilities they provide for both residents and visitors alike,” he said.

“The creation of extra employment is an added boost - and there is a real feel-good factor around Clacton seafront at the moment.

“We have more than £30 million pounds worth of new beaches which will be available for the full season for the first time and there is further investment taking place at the Clacton Pavilion site.

“We are really looking at a renaissance of our seafront which will attract more visitors and bring in extra spending power all year round – it is really encouraging for the future.”
